Paradise Calling

The first thing I would like to state is that northern Thailand is a motorist’s paradise. As far as the joy of riding or driving on superb roads goes, against scenic backdrops, with fellow motorists being as courteous as possible, and not a speed-breaker in sight, I think it checks all the boxes in my list.

The people there seem to actually follow the rules, are extremely considerate, and are in no tearing hurry to get anywhere, unlike the many fine specimens in our dear country. After spending a few days without hearing a single vehicle honking, coming back to India, the first thing I heard was the cacophony of jarring beeps and honks — home sweet home, eh?

Being a work trip, I may not have been able to experience everything worth seeing, but from what I did manage, I am in love with the place. The fresh air, fresh fruits and veggies, flavourful food and the warmth of the people are unparalleled.

Riding through the countryside, one thing I loved was that wherever we stopped, there'd be fresh, chilled orange juice waiting for us. Other than that, the variety of things to snack on during breaks was mind-blowing. Considering my love for food, it was no less than paradise.

Having limited time on my hands, I rode with my group through the day and explored the city through the night. I didn't get much sleep on the trip, but I sure made up for it in enthusiasm. The automotive culture in Thailand is truly amazing. From souped up scooters, to decked up trucks and everything in between. Even the tuk-tuks were nothing short of awesome.

The love for automobiles saw to it that I made quite a few new friends on this trip through northern Thailand. Chiang Mai, Nan and Phayao have left a lasting impression on me and I can't wait to go back again.
